Leads McKinsey’s data science work for heavy industry clients around the world

Milan Korbel is a highly accomplished professional with a deep passion for technology, currently leading McKinsey's Global Energy & Materials Labs (GEM Labs) to build at-scale data and software applications for asset-intensive industries. He also co-leads McKinsey’s GEM Operations Practice in Asia, including Tech-enabled Energy and Materials. Moreover, Milan oversees a technology of broader assets across McKinsey's GEM services, including MineLens, MineSpans, and OptimusAI.

Drawing on over two decades of experience in heavy industry, automation, software, and technology, Milan helps clients transform their businesses with technology tools and analytical use cases. This includes logistics, procurement, set-point optimization, scheduling, planning, predictive maintenance, robotic process automation, and people analytics.

Some examples of his recent work include the following:

  • spearheading proprietary technologies that empower McKinsey teams, including QuantumBlack, to architect and deploy large-scale AI advisory systems for real-time optimization of mining operations
  • overseeing a comprehensive advanced analytics enhancement program for a major processing refinery, resulting in the development and implementation of AI-driven process control, predictive maintenance solutions, and scheduling systems
  • leading an analytics program with a large mining company to create and deploy advanced analytics opportunities across multiple sites on three continents, incorporating AI in procurement, operations, and finance
  • engineering predictive maintenance models that significantly enhanced asset reliability and process automation across various process industries

Milan’s expertise extends to digital strategy and operations, and he has led the firm’s work in this space in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Prior to rejoining McKinsey, Milan has been hands on deploying process control and data science solutions around the world.

Outside of work, Milan is an adjunct professor at the University of Sydney and sits on non-profit boards. He is an enthusiastic tennis player, calisthenics practitioner, and reader of fantasy books.
