Bringing my authentic self to work

My journey at McKinsey started in 2015 when I joined the Research team after concluding my masters. From the start, I worked with a team of exceptional professionals on macroeconomic and economic development topics. This was an amazing opportunity to apply my bachelor’s in economics and master’s in international relations. I originally thought my journey would go on in the same direction for many years. However, things have not been as linear as I planned…and that is a good thing.

Finding Equal at McKinsey

Right after I started working at the firm, I joined Equal at McKinsey, our affinity group for LGBTQ+ colleagues and formal allies. It was so great to connect with other LGBTQ+ colleagues who, like me, have been on journeys of self-acceptance and discovery. Finding such a space in which I could celebrate my queerness and be openly proud about who I am was inspiring. Over time, I got more involved with Equal at McKinsey such as recruiting activities, planning meetings, connectivity and promoting awareness on LGBTQ+ related topics. Helping the group grow became my new passion, so I became an active ally, supporter, and advocate for an equitable and just workplace. What started as a side activity became a full-time role when, after three years at McKinsey, I officially joined the Diversity & Inclusion team.

A turning point in my career.

For the first time in 10 years, I was not studying or working on something related to economics. Beginning a new chapter came with challenges, insecurities and learnings, especially when working on topics that were new to me. But after a few months I was certain this was the right choice for me, as it became my true passion. Promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, and celebrating the successes of our diverse colleagues are the driving forces behind my job. As a firm and community, we are constantly evolving and getting closer to what we aim to be one day. Much has changed at McKinsey over the past several years, for the better, and I’m very proud to have been part of the journey.
