Associate - Real Estate

Job ID: 92309
  • London

Do you want to do work that matters, alongside supportive leaders who will help you grow faster than you ever thought possible? Are you a creative problem-solver who is energized by challenges? You’ve come to the right place.

Who You'll Work With

You will be based in our London office as part of our Real Estate team, which forms part of our Private Capital practice.
Our Private Capital practice is a world leading advisor to private equity and institutional investors, and a high growth area for the Firm, working with many of the most significant global and local private investors and their portfolio companies.
Real Estate is one of the largest invested-in asset classes globally and is undergoing rapid change, not least from digitization, decarbonization and operationalization. We boldly serve clients to drive sustainable and inclusive growth.
The team pairs extensive expertise with deep functional knowledge to help our clients reimagine the role of space. We serve a variety of real estate leaders across the ecosystem, from investors and developers, to corporate occupiers and innovators. We work on a wide range of topics including investment strategy, digital and advanced analytics, people and operating model, holistic transformation and large-scale development.
You will work in teams and directly with our clients. You will also work with the wider McKinsey network including a range of experts in the firm, from industry and functional experts to data scientists to researchers to software and app designers.

Your impact within our firm

You will work in teams of typically 3-5 consultants to support clients on their real estate agenda.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to assess market attractiveness, provide targeted information and specialized analysis on strategy, as well as prepare and deliver high-impact verbal and written communication of your synthesized findings. You will also have the opportunity to work globally with clients in reimagining the role of space, which sometimes involve digital and organizational transformations. You will be a subject matter expert on real estate topics. You will be recognized as a valuable source of experience, information and expertise, both inside the firm and by our clients.
You will receive training on how to better structure ambiguous problems and take action to solve them, synthesize clear takeaways from complex information into clear takeaways and recommendations, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. You will work effectively with diverse teams to come up with the best solution and move people and organizations to act. To achieve this, you will establish trust-based relationships with clients to better-serve their organizations, communicate effectively with all audiences including senior leaders and develop your leadership style, leveraging your own passions, strengths and personal values.
McKinsey believes in strengths-based development and coaching, and you’ll receive frequent mentoring from colleagues. This will include a senior colleague from your office or practice who will help you grow and achieve your career goals. Additionally, you will have a professional development manager who will manage staffing to help you choose projects based on your priorities as well as the needs of client service teams. When you join McKinsey, you are joining a firm that will invest in your professional development.
During your first few years with the firm, you will serve on multiple client engagements and work with a number of colleagues and clients in a range of settings across different industry and functional areas and develop significant business experience as well as an investor mindset. You will likely intersect with many elements of our firm’s work including digital, implementation, and tech and analytics capabilities.
This role differs from McKinsey’s Generalist Associate role in its focus. Your role will focus mostly on serving clients on real estate topics, though because our clients with an interest in real estate are diverse, the role still offers exposure to a wide variety of sectors and functional levers. Real Estate Consultants will be staffed full time to client engagements. There is flexibility to hire at either Junior Associate or Associate level, depending on experience.

Your qualifications and skills

  • Undergraduate or master’s degree with between 2-5 years (Junior Associate) or 5+ years (Associate) of full-time work experience after completing your degree
  • Previous experience in a Real Estate company, Professional Services, Investment Banking, or Private Equity environment with direct and hands-on real estate expertise
  • Investor mindset and experience or strong interest in real estate, private equity and/or venture capital
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and create an inclusive environment with people at all levels of an organization
  • Capability to drive an independent workstream in the context of a broader team project
  • Comfort with ambiguous, ever-changing situations
  • Ability to break down and solve problems through quantitative thinking and analysis
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English
