Who You'll Work With

You will be based in Tokyo, Japan as part of McKinsey’s Global Client Capability Network (CCN), which includes more than 3,000 diverse professionals delivering distinctive client impact and fueled by a culture of innovation. You’ll be part of our global EPNG (Electric Power & Natural Gas) knowledge network to generate distinctive insights and proprietary knowledge with a specific focus on Japan but also beyond. Within our EPNG Capabilities & Insights network, you'll be working on strategic, analytical, and operational topics, with a focus on the energy transition incl. renewables, strategy/corporate finance, transmission & distribution (T&D) or retail markets largely in Japan.

Your impact within our firm

You will leverage a solid understanding of business and technology trends, issues, and concepts in the power and gas industry to efficiently respond to complex research questions by researching and synthesizing actionable facts and insights to our consulting teams and clients.

You will also have the opportunity to work alongside senior knowledge professionals on larger client facing projects and internal knowledge initiatives. By collecting and analyzing data and information found in databases and/or other primary and secondary research tools, you will assemble the relevant fact base, counsel consultants and clients on the scope of the business, the operations, technology, strategic and economic trends surrounding the issue, and provide insights and analysis for solving client problems.
On a daily basis, you will identify the key issues for a problem at hand and determine the most appropriate solution, while effectively balancing quality, availability, timeliness, and cost factors. You’ll likely perform a variety of analyses such as benchmarking, trend identification, industry profiling, market sizing, growth projections and opportunity scanning to add value to problem-solving discussions.
You will also participate in, and eventually lead, internal knowledge development and capability-building initiatives. Lasty, you’ll use advanced analytics tools to prepare and analyze large datasets to distil insights.

Your qualifications and skills

  • A degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, or related fields
  • An advanced degree, MSc, MBA or equivalent either in Engineering / Economics and similar is a plus
  • 2+ years of work experience in the electric power and/or natural gas industry, ideally including work around corporate strategy, generation, T&D or retail business
  • Good perspective on the electric power and natural gas industry incl. good understanding on trends and recent developments; ideally specific deeper knowledge on utilities strategies and/or power/gas retail, T&D or generation markets
  • Strong problem-solving skills and conceptual abilities with an analytical mindset incl. an excellent business acumen
  • Abilities in collection, analysis and synthesis of information and knowledge incl. skills to communicate complex ideas effectively
  • Excellent communication skills in Japanese and English language
  • Strong multitasking abilities, service-oriented personality, intellectual curiosity and an investigative mind
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and effectively with people at all levels in an organization
