Professional Development Manager

Job ID: 88848
  • Tokyo

Are you driven by the opportunity to tackle complex challenges and work alongside top leaders? Do you want to be part of a team that delivers outcomes that others simply can’t? If so, you’ve come to the right place.

Who You'll Work With

You’ll work in our Tokyo office as part of our Professional Development team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a large and fast-growing priority location for McKinsey. Each member of our Professional Development team has three main areas of responsibility: 1) You will lead professional development for consultant colleagues, including integration, development, staffing, and evaluation. 2) You will lead the talent management for a specific sector and/or role path. 3) You will lead at least one major people initiative.

Your impact within our firm

Our work is all about collaboration and co-creation!
You will develop trusting and positive relationships with partners, consultants, and other PD colleagues to ensure consultants are staffed on teams that meet both client needs and the professional development needs of the individual consultants.
Each PDM is expected to respect each other’s opinions, foster productive debate, and share own thoughts in a professional, inclusive manner.
You are expected to provide strategic thought leadership and have a grounded mindset to ‘roll up one’s sleeves’ and be active in execution.
You will form a credible, trust-based professional relationship with each consultant, including an in-depth understanding of professional aspirations, experiences, strengths, development needs, and relevant personal circumstances – both on an on-going basis and around specific engagements.
You will monitor consultants’ development and provide counsel on appropriate assignments, skill development & training, career progression, mobility and other topics as they arise.
You will be a discussion and thought partner for our consulting staff, in particular Business Analysts, Associates and Engagement Managers, fostering an in-depth understanding of their professional aspirations, experiences, strengths, development needs, and relevant personal circumstances. Based on all of this and in response to client needs, you will facilitate staffing for consultants.
You will build strong trust-based relationships with our partners and enable better decision making on both a tactical (e.g., effective and efficient team formation) and strategic (e.g., longer term sector strategy and people pipeline/initiatives) level.
You will also help create and maintain a vibrant professional community by supporting consultant cohorts and our partner leads.
You will take an active role as a thought leader and rolling up your sleeves to implement various people-related initiatives.

Your qualifications and skills

  • Undergraduate degree required; MBA or other professional degree preferred
  • 5+ years’ experience in a people role where you have had direct interaction with employees and leaders alike
  • Experience in professional development, talent management and/or people spaces
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and transparently in a team environment
  • Great interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including senior stakeholders with very high expectations
  • Strong influencing and coaching capabilities
  • Problem solving skill
  • Exceptional organizational and administrative skills
  • The ability to operate well and get results in ambiguous situations
  • Non-hierarchical approach; the flexibility to build consensus
  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written). Japanese is a plus but not required
