Senior Associate, McKinsey DigitalZurich

Master’s degree in computer science

I wanted to work on broad computer science topics, beyond just coding.

From coding to problem solving

The desire to spend more time solving higher level problems is what let me to consulting. At McKinsey, I’ve found a place where I can focus on problem-solving of technical issues and using my computer science knowledge to get there.

Make your own McKinsey

I have always been an adventurer at heart. McKinsey enables me to combine my sense for adventure with my work. On my second project I was able to travel to a remote place in Alaska above the polar circle. I was amazed by the innovative spirit and speed of our team, which was very diverse: we had data, mathematics, chemical, and geological experts all on one table. Seeing the northern lights after a hard day of work was just incredible!

McKinsey is a place not just for adventurers, whatever your passion is you will find a project to pursue it. The slogan “Make your own McKinsey” is lived and supported by all colleagues.

Professional development

At McKinsey, there is a very strong growth culture and everyone is interested in your development. From my experience, there are three parts to this: training, on-the-job learning, and mentoring.

Everyone starts with a week of basic consulting-skills training. Since I had very little business background, I was offered an additional business training. And since I joined McKinsey Digital, I received specific IT training. In addition, there are also skills and personality training. All of this education allows you to build a strong and diverse network and grow together with your peers.

Starting with your first project, you will be learning by doing, and your team members will help you acquire the necessary skills for a project—including how to create presentations, how to conduct client interviews, and how to problem solve with the team. Team members will give very open, honest, and direct feedback. However, you are ultimately responsible for your development path, and you choose your challenges and studies.

You are connected with people that support you throughout all potential challenges: starting with a mentor to help you settle in and answer all your questions. You are also assigned a development leader to provide you with sound advice about your learning path. Beyond that, every colleague is eager to share their experiences to help you grow.

A passion for Zurich

At McKinsey, you will meet interesting people with lots of energy and drive. There are all kinds of groups—whether it’s soccer, theater, or yoga, you will find people that share your interests. It inspires me that every colleague has their unique story. I have enjoyed my ride at McKinsey and have profoundly broadened my horizon.
