Broader travel horizons

Fueled by a booming economy and the world’s largest population, more Indian tourists are expected to set out for international destinations in coming years, with the number of trips increasing from 13 million in 2022 to potentially more than 80 million in 2040. Senior partner Neelesh Mundra and colleagues find that 70 percent of Indian travelers chose nearby destinations for the past decade, particularly in the Middle East and South Asia. The United Arab Emirates was the most visited by Indian leisure travelers, followed by the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Top destinations are steady favorites; others have gained ground and new destinations have appeared.

A line graph shows the top 20 international travel destinations for Indian tourists for 4 separate years: 2010, 2014, 2019, and 2022. The travel destinations are tracked into 3 groups based on performance: stalwarts, gainers, and new entrants. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the US are stalwarts, with the UAE as most visited destination for all 4 years and the US moving from the 5th spot in 2010 to 2nd in 2022. Australia, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia are gainers, with Saudia Arabia moving from the 8th spot in 2010 to 3rd in 2022; Australia moved from the 20th spot in 2010 to 10th in 2022; and Indonesia from the 18th spot in 2010 to 13th in 2022. New entrants include Canada at 15th in 2022, Türkiye at 17th in 2022, and Sweden at 19th in 2019 but not showing in 2022.
