Emissions advantage

Continued investments in fossil fuels are crucial even as the world aims to achieve a low-carbon future, to ensure energy access and security for people globally until the net-zero goal is met. Senior partner Micah Smith and colleagues find that the Gulf of Mexico holds a lower-carbon potential, as it releases less than half of the emissions per barrel than are released by other major basins.

The Gulf of Mexico has among the lowest emissions per barrel of all major basins in the world.
