Have no car, will travel

Younger drivers in Europe have distinct mobility preferences, opting more often than older generations do for public transit and shared mobility modes over private vehicles, according to a survey by senior partner Max Flötotto and colleagues. European Gen Z consumers also indicate they plan to more frequently use sustainable-mobility modes, such as car sharing.

Younger consumers in Europe are less likely to use private cars and are more likely to use public transit or micromobility options than older people.

A series of 3 horizontal pie charts show the percentage of respondents in Europe who currently use a particular mode of travel. Each bar represents a different age group: those under age 30, those aged 30–45, and those aged 45 and older. The available options for travel are private vehicle, public transit, taxi or ride hailing, car sharing, micromobility, and pooled shared mobility. There is a clear disparity among age groups regarding opinions of private vehicles, with only 42% of those under age 30 regularly using a private vehicle, compared with 77% percent of those 45 and older.
