Chronic diseases are expected to create an increased burden globally, find senior partner Ralf Dreischmeier and coauthors. Conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and respiratory disease were causes or contributing factors in 75 percent of worldwide deaths in 2010 and 79 percent in 2020. By 2030, experts predict that percentage could grow to as much as 84 percent. Digital therapeutics, such as regular monitoring through connected medical devices, could help with disease management.

Three sets of bubbles display global death rates: 50 million in 2010, 60 million in 2020, and an estimated 67 million in 2030. The exhibit animates, breaking down each of the individual years into percentages of two different types of causes of death: chronic diseases (including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, dementia, diabetes, kidney diseases, liver diseases, and respiratory diseases), and nonchronic factors (including respiratory infections, road injuries, and tuberculosis). In 2010, 75% of the causes of death were due to chronic diseases. In 2020, 79% of deaths are from chronic diseases, and the 2030 estimate is that chronic diseases will be the cause of 84% of deaths.
