Zero Emission Area Handbook
Global New Mobility Coalition

Healthier cities need new solutions.
The European commitment to a 1.5ºC pathway requires transportation decarbonization.
There has been a 20-35% congestion increase globally since 2010.

Zero-emission urban mobility can help reduce carbon emissions, improve mobility, and free up public space...

...while improving equitable access to sustainable mobility and creating new business opportunities.
The Global New Mobility Coalition, with knowledge support from McKinsey and in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, developed this interactive, digital platform in an effort to create a handbook for cities and mobility operators on how to enable zero emission areas (ZEAs) and learn from each other. Handbook components include:
- Proposed ZEA measures identified through multistakeholder design thinking dialogues
- Examples or case studies (for example, street, zone, district) from global cities and mobility operators
- Model in a box—a quantitative modeling tool developed through partnership with a US city. This can be adapted for other cities to provide an additional resource for demonstrating the potential impact of a ZEA
Cities are leading the way
Over a century, Paris’ Rue de Rivoli has transformed

From a dirt road with horse-drawn carriages...

To a paved road full of cars and pedestrians...

To a 6-lane, one-way car- only arterial...

To a bike- and pedestrian- only street...
City alliances can be helpful in guiding local action
47C40 Cities and additional partner cities are actively pursuing clean mobility initiatives.
