McKinsey has introduced me to a wide range of industries, allowed me to work on a variety of projects, and offered me the flexibility to explore roles and make my own path. While all of this is important, I stayed at the firm because of the quality of work we do, and the impact we have on a global scale.

I was an economics honors student from one of the top graduate colleges in India: Lady Shri Ram College for Women. After college, I became an analyst on the infrastructure and transportation team at UBS Investment Bank in India. I worked there for almost two years but I wanted to explore other sectors and industries before focusing on one area to build my expertise.

I learned about McKinsey from a UBS colleague who had joined the firm’s knowledge center, now known as the Client Capabilities Network hub in Chennai. I joined the firm’s Asia regional research team in 2011 and since then, I have worked across industries and geographies, learned about diverse dynamics, grown professionally, and explored areas I am passionate about.

My role in the firm

As a knowledge expert in the capital excellence team, I focus on funding and financing for infrastructure assets. I also analyze infrastructure technology products and services, from a strategy, business case development, project-value improvement, and due diligence perspective.

I use my expertise to conduct research and share my analysis and recommendations to bring clients up to speed in the early stages of a project. I also create and contribute to cutting-edge knowledge, which the firm leverages for client development.

One of my most meaningful projects was a knowledge project. Many infrastructure investors have broadened their target investments beyond traditional core infrastructure, such as highways and power plants. These core-plus infrastructure investments are increasingly centered around infrastructure technology.

My team spent over three months building ground-up knowledge in order to identify technology disruptions, their implications, and potential opportunities for asset owners and investors. We created financial models quantifying the short, medium and long run impact of each new technological solution and further validated our findings via industry experts. We have now used the work for over 20 client situations.

This project was meaningful because we were building fresh content while learning new things in a fast-paced environment. I thrive on knowledge building, and I am very passionate about developing new content. This was also my first big project after I returned from maternity leave, and the team leadership made sure I had all the support and flexibility I needed as a first-time mother returning to work. My transition back was seamless and very encouraging.

Why I am at McKinsey

McKinsey has introduced me to a wide range of industries, allowed me to work on a variety of projects, and offered me the flexibility to explore roles and make my own path. While all of this is important, I stayed at McKinsey because of the quality of work we do here and the impact we can have on a global scale.

The firm places tremendous emphasis on professional growth. The focus on learning and development, especially in my early years, molded my thought process, approach, and outlook.
