I enjoy seeing people grow and hit goals, and I love helping women develop careers in data.
I earned my degree in computer engineering, but after graduating, I was more drawn to data analytics. Prior to applying to McKinsey, I didn’t know much about the firm other than my friends who worked in the San José office had always spoken so highly of it.
Then one day a friend called me and told me about an open role in data analytics, so I applied, and here I am seven years later.
My role in the firm
I work with our Promotion Performance group and focus on marketing and sales data. What’s different about my role compared to other data analysts here at the firm is I work with just one client at a time. I’ve been with my current client for two years. The client subscribes to a McKinsey proprietary solution, which helps to forecast promotions.
The client sends me their data, including client lists, pricing, sales data, and transactions. My role is to review and prepare the data, then put it into our solution so they can access it. The client can also come to me for analysis or help regarding how to leverage the solution. For example, a client might want insights about a holiday promotion, so I look into the data and offer details and projections.
While I have had a long-term relationship with this particular client, my team also supports organizations that just want analysis for two months, so the projects can also be quick. We help clients understand how promotions are performing, if they need to run new ones, or if they should consider changing their prices or targeting. We also conduct analytics for partners so they can present opportunities or advise on potential risks when working with clients.
Fulfilling two passions at the firm
Data analysis is definitely a passion, but I am also enthusiastic about developing people. I enjoy seeing people grow and hit goals, and I love helping women prepare for the industry and develop careers in data analysis.
McKinsey encourages and enables participation in projects where you can mentor women. I am involved in the Lillian Dombrowski Mentoring Program, which aims to bring more women into STEM roles at our firm. Lillian Dombrowski was the first women colleague hired by McKinsey, and the program was named after her to recognize her impact.
Developing knowledge and skills
I’m constantly learning and developing my technical skills and am encouraged to take training on anything that interests me or that can help me grow. For example, if a client is requesting a new technology, or they’re using a software I’m not familiar with, I can just contact our learning team, who will do the analysis and coordinate the training or certification for me.
Beyond having access to endless technical trainings, I’ve also developed other skills, such as how to communicate with team members and clients, problem solve, and build client-ready presentations.
I know when I am ready to jump into a new industry, McKinsey will provide the skills development and training for me to succeed in my new role.
