Watch the replay: Our experts discuss the industries with potential to become the next big arenas of competition

Arenas are a unique category of industries defined by two characteristics: high growth and dynamism. They capture an outsize share of the economy’s growth, and the market shares of players within them change to an outsize degree.

MGI identified 18 potential arenas of the future that could reshape the global business landscape, generating $29 trillion to $48 trillion in revenues by 2040. These arenas range from AI software and services to cybersecurity, from space to drugs for obesity and related conditions, and from robotics to nonmedical biotechnology.

These arenas are set to reshape many aspects of the global economy and society, including data consumption, health, communication, and mobility, with broader implications for ethics, data privacy, and sustainability. To dive deeper into their implications, MGI hosted a virtual event on the themes of a new report, The next big arenas of competition.

The webcast featured a presentation on the research findings by report authors Kweilin Ellingrud and Michael Birshan, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Chris Bradley with leading McKinsey experts Ani Kelkar, Gayatri Shenai, and Humayun Tai.

The panel discussed the specific factors that contribute to the extraordinary growth and dynamism of arenas of competition compared to other industries; what strategies companies should adopt to effectively navigate and compete within emerging arenas of competition; and how the emergence of 18 future arenas by 2040 could impact the global economy and society.
