From ‘me’ to ‘we.’ Overconfident leadership can contribute to costly errors. However, making a mindset shift from a command-and-control management style to more inclusive leadership can be tough. It may help to reflect on why a person tends to make decisions on their own. Some may believe that the opinions of others aren’t important, even though collaborating with stakeholders can strengthen support for decisions. Framing one’s position as an option can also encourage teamwork, organizational experts suggest. [HBR]
An open door. Better leadership skills are required to empower workers in the hybrid workplace, according to a behavioral scientist at the London School of Economics. A 2022 study of financial services professionals found that employees want to work with empathic leaders in a psychologically safe environment where their experiences, observations, and opinions are welcomed. To foster trust with teams, leaders can set an open-door policy to promote increased communication and feedback. [FT]
Under new management. For decades, organizations sought to preserve stability and maximize earnings for shareholders, while paying little attention to the broader effects of their actions. But many organizations are currently transforming their industries with a new organizational approach that aims to be open and adaptable; unleashes the energy, passion, and capabilities of its people; reimagines strategy; and focuses on delivering greater value to all stakeholders, McKinsey senior partner Aaron De Smet and coauthors reveal.
From boss to visionary. Organizations today must go beyond profits and seek to maximize value for all stakeholders, including contributing to society and a healthy planet. That means leaders should evolve beyond being managers to become visionaries. After all, moving from average performance to top-quintile success takes crafting a resonant purpose and boldly imagining and pursuing the future.
