Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, Cho Nam-Joo
“Just now I’m reading Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, by Cho Nam-Joo, an eerie, matter-of-fact novel about the toll sexism takes on a young Korean woman. It’s easier to think about discrimination in another culture, where you can temporarily set aside your own defensiveness. It has made me think about all the people I’ve known who’ve quietly left the business world, for a temporary break or for good, and what I should have done to support them. It has helped me see discrimination not just as violent, scary, or unfair but as just flat-out exhausting.”
