Managing risk and challenges toward the end of a mine life

A large hard-rock opencast operation was nearing its end of life yet needed to maintain volumes while reducing costs, despite very challenging pit constraints.

MineLens benchmarks compared the mine’s current equipment, labor, and cost performance with those of its peers and allowed improvement opportunities to be identified, quantified, and prioritized:

• A MineLens expert site visit ensured that the technical complexities of the pit were incorporated into the analysis
• A list of practical next steps was developed with site management for immediate implementation

• Generated new ideas and “out of the box” thinking about mine performance and practices
• Recommendations that could be implemented with significant positive impact
• MineLens report is still used by the new mine manager as a good overview and action plan
