Jakob is a partner in McKinsey’s Munich office and a leadership member of the Firm’s Battery Accelerator Team. He works with companies along the battery value chain and investment organizations to help improve business performance and accelerate scale-ups, develop strategies, and make investment decisions. Having worked more than 15 years on batteries with McKinsey and in the industry, Jakob brings deep expertise in cell and pack technologies and markets, production processes and gigafactory development, and battery supply chains to his clients. Building on his deep battery industry knowledge and expertise, he helps leading companies meet the challenge and the opportunity of a battery market, which grows more than 30 percent each year.
Some of his recent client work in Europe, North America, and Asia–Pacific includes the following:
- supporting battery gigafactory projects net-present value improvement, including capital expenditure and operating expenditures
- building joint-venture partnerships for active material and for battery-cell manufacturing
- developing circular economy strategies for OEMs and market-entry strategies for battery recycling
- shaping battery raw material and cell-sourcing strategies for cell manufacturers and automotive clients
- building growth strategies for battery cell-component suppliers and cell-manufacturing equipment suppliers
Prior to joining McKinsey, Jakob worked in the automotive industry and contributed as project manager to the development and scale-up of Li-ion cell and battery pack design and manufacturing. Jakob also focused for two years on sustainable energy development with the United Nations Environment Programme.
Jakob is a passionate sailor on races and cruises and a sailing coach and speaks fluent German and English, as well as social French.
