Industry exports

Progress in terms of increasing industry exports (% of GDP)

Despite a small decrease in 2023 to 21.4 percent of GDP compared to the previous year, Spain still has a significant level of industrial exports compared to prepandemic levels.

The government has bet on the internationalization of the economy, having defined a target of €400 million for 2027 (versus €384 million in 2023).

Of those exports (excluding agriculture and food and beverages), the largest components were motor vehicles (16 percent), followed by ores, slag, and ash (7 percent), and machinery and mechanical appliances (7 percent).

Spain has sustained a high level of industrial exports, after 2021 to 2022 growth.
Indicator definition

Annual exports as a percentage of GDP, excluding services, agriculture and food and beverage exports—thus trying to capture the core of the Spanish industrial exports.

In this analysis, we are trying to capture the core Spanish industrial base.

Progress assessment
The most recent data point is 21.4 percent industrial exports as share of GDP, based on data from Servicios del Comercio Exterior del Gobierno de España (Comex). To assess progress, a linear curve replicating the trend registered in the 2011–21 period (a period of continued growth of industrial exports) is drawn up to 2030. To that curve, a standard deviation (based on 2011–21 historical data) is removed or added to create an on-track range. As the most recent progress is within that range, the status for the indicator is on track.
