Spain’s manufacturing GVA share has remained relatively stable in the past decade, between 11.8 percent and 12.4 percent. However, looking further back, Spain’s industry has declined substantially, from 18.2 percent in 1998, down to the approximate 12.0 percent mark in 2009.
The same trajectory was felt at a European level, though not at such a dramatic pace. The EU average is at 16.4 percent today, more than four percentage points above Spain.
To reach the 13.1 percent “arrival reference” for 2030, the industry GVA has to grow 1.7 times1 faster than the overall economy, to gain additional share versus other sectors.
If we look at the GVA of the broader industry, including mining, energy generation, and water and waste management, the trend has been even more stable and the gap versus the European Union is similar (16.1 percent versus 20.3 percent in 2023, respectively).
