Spain had a sharp drop in vehicle production numbers in 2020, further accentuated in 2021, from which it has not yet recovered completely.
Vehicle production had reached 2.8 million units in 2016, the best year of the past decade. Today’s figure of 2.45 million is 250,000 vehicles below the 2014–19 average.
The evolution of vehicle production and the overall automotive industry in Spain is particularly relevant given its importance to the economy: 10 percent of GDP and 18 percent of total exports.1
Spain is currently the second largest European vehicle producer, behind Germany. However, the share of electrical vehicles (EVs) in its vehicle production is low, around 10 percent in 2023 (251,000 vehicles) versus about 30 percent in Germany (1.30 million vehicles).2
